Economic Impact of the Beer Industry on
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

The United States is the world’s largest producer of beer, providing over 90 million adult consumers of legal drinking age with America’s beverage. On average, beer represents 88 percent of the volume of all licensed, or alcohol beverages sold in the U.S. The beer industry is comprised of brewers, wholesalers and retailers, encompassing what is known today as the “three-tier system” of beer distribution. Combined, each tier is a major contributor to the U.S., state and local economy, contributing billions of dollars in wages and taxes.

Annually, the beer industry in Pennsylvania pays $1.1 billion in federal, state and local taxes.

Pennsylvania ’s beer industry includes breweries, wholesalers and retailers. Also, numerous other businesses, such as packaging manufacturers, industry suppliers and advertising agencies, depend on the beer industry for their livelihood.

Annually, the total economic impact of beer-related businesses to the Pennsylvania economy is nearly $7 billion. Directly and indirectly, the beer industry employs 80,873 Pennsylvania workers, providing them with $2.3 billion in wages and benefits.

The Pennsylvania Beer Wholesalers Association (PBWA) represents the second tier of the beer industry, more than 50 licensed, independent beer wholesalers with operations servicing every county and legislative district across the Commonwealth.

If you have any questions pertaining to the distribution of beer, the PBWA or would like additional information regarding economic impact of the beer industry, please feel free to contact us.
