Responsible Party Planning Guide for Hosts and Hostesses
Planning a party or social gathering requires finalizing many important details before your guests arrive, such as preparing a menu, choosing a guest list and, of course, selecting a time and date!
As the host or hostess, your first priority should be to create a safe environment and host a memorable event. Additionally, the most important detail of any successful gathering is to ensure that guests who choose to consume alcohol will be doing so responsibly and moderately
- Make certain alcohol is consumed by those of legal drinking age only
- Plan ahead by making a list of taxicab services in your community
- Always serve food with alcohol. Good food not only complements the beverages your guests are consuming, it also moderates the effects of alcohol
- Be sure to provide alternative beverages, such as coffee, soft drinks, fruit juices, bottled water and nonalcoholic beer and wine
- Never force licensed beverages on any of your guests. Spacing drinks can help guests stay within their personal limits
- If you are serving a punch mixed with alcohol, be sure to make a nonalcoholic version of the recipe and clearly label which punch bowl does and does not have alcohol as an ingredient
- Have hors d’oeuvres placed throughout your home for guests to easily snack on, and refill dishes that are empty or running low
- Encourage moderate consumption by deciding ahead of time the amount of alcohol beverages, whether it’s beer, wine or spirits, you will provide. Remember, it takes one hour for the body to metabolize a 12-ounce serving of beer. Consider how long your event will last and calculate about one beer per hour for each guest. Make certain to stop serving alcohol one hour before the party ends
- To make the party worry free, choose a reliable “bartender” so guests don’t mix their own drinks. While someone may not look as if they have had too much to drink, the bartender will know better!
- Never hesitate to take the keys away from someone who has had too much to drink. Be prepared to call a taxicab or provide a room in your home for a guest to stay over
By planning ahead and following these guidelines, you can ensure a safe and fun celebration for all of your guests.
